reflection on progress so far.....

targets for filming on saturday 29 november 2014

  • Get more close up shots of the artists - making sure there is more emotion in his facial expressions
  • costume change for the artists- this will change for especially the narrative. Instead of victor wearing the green baseball jacket throughout the music video i will make sure he changes into a slighty different outfit
  • i will structure my music video to this plan :
  1. 1st verse - leicester square (daylight)
  2. 2nd verse- Trafalgar square (mid-day)
  3. chorus - daylight (leicester square) and midday/night (embankment/trafalgar square)
i will also try to be more flexible with my shots at each location.

Rough cut editing for music video

I am using final cut pro to edit the music video. I feel this program is very useful in editing the music video because i am able to cut and reshape some of the shots. also i am able to put my 'cutaways' in the right places by using the tool bar on the right. moreover i am also able to reuse different shots from different locations because i can pick and choose from the recording lists below which one i want to use .

production of music video : my evaluation of the filming process

Powered by emaze

reflection on progress: have i achieved the targets i set last week?

last weeks targets :

  1. film - in the correct location at the right time frame so that there are no problems with lighting in my music video
  2. to be able to produce a rough cut of my music video
  3. to make sure my artist creates a brand identity in the music video where he can lip sync the lyrics to the song at the same time of the song playing
have I fulfilled all these targets :

  1.  I have completed my first target - so far i have footage of the artists lip synching with the original song through out the whole music video . we filmed in all the correct locations this week and added an additional location which was Trafalgar square near the fountains.
  2. I have not yet completed a rough cut of my music video however i feel that by the end of this week i should be able to gather all footage together in order to have a rough cut prepared for lesson on monday
  3. I believe my artists victor mase has created brand identity throughout the music video. especially by wearing the green base ball jacket which i feel his audience will love and want to buy a copy from high street stores such as topman

goals for this week :

  1.  To be able to complete a full rough cut of  my music video and get feedback from my class as well as teacher on what can be improved and what should change
  2. to be able to complete a minimum of 20 more blog posts this week
  3. to posts pictures and videos of how i am progressing - how i am finding editing and how i am trying to address any issues in my music video that i feel can improve.
  4. to make sure that the artists puts more 'emotion' in his facial expressions whilst lip synching the song so that the audience may also feel that they too can relate.
what would i score myself out of 20 for my progress thus far?

risk assessment

Recasting of the potential actress

I originally had an actress playing the role of victor mase 'girlfriend' in the music video however due to her busy school schedule she will not be able to perform in my music video. so i have not found a replacement for the actress however i am thinking of taking up the part of 'victor mase girlfriend in the video.

however there are some risk in taking up this part whilst filming :

  • the camera positioning may be off
  • i may need to get help from other students who may be busy during the week
  • it may be difficult to get focus on some shots for the artist
  • also if the camera is on the tripod facing only me and 'victor mase' it may be dangerous because there may be thieves targeting the camera
however looking at a variety of music video's i have come up with specific scenes that will have less of a risk whilst filming . for example:

in trey songs- heart attack music video - there are multiple shots where the camera is being held in one position as so the actors/actress in the shot do most of the action . In my music video i would like to recreate some of the shots so that they may act as 'potential cutaways' and fill in any extra time left .
example A:

example A is a shot i may potentially use in my music video this is because even though me and 'victor' will be acting out this shot in the music video we are still able to keep a close eye on the camera equipment to make sure we get a great shot.
example B:
If i decide to use this shot i will make sure the actors/actress are 'looking happy' as this is most suited for the narrative of the song - lego house by ed sheeran

here are some other potential shots :

23rd november 2014- failure to film due to bad weather

I planned to film on sunday 23rd november, however i could not film that day because the weather was really bad and it would put all the camera equipment at risk of getting  broken

planning for music video : rough copy of digipak

At the moment i am still working on the Digipak for victor mase. here is a rough copy of what the album cover may look like. I am using photoshop to edit and make the album cover and so far i have used the black and white foreground to create synergy.

planning for music video : what i will do differently from filming the first time.

what i will do differently from filming the first time:

  • use lighting equipment - during the first take of filming it was difficult to film shots at night and so in some of the shots were to dark. it was also difficult to capture the artist facial expressions.
  • Get shots of the location more clearly - by smoothly zooming in and out of the objects to make sure i get a cinematic finish after filming.
  • i will also make sure that the time we plan to shot will not affect the lighting. for example instead of filming at around 6:30pm when it gets dark we will try and film around 12:30
  • lastly i will check weather patterns before planning to film on certain days.

planning for music video : first take on music video

I originally filmed on wednesday 5th november 2014, but the shots were too dark and so i plan to reshoot this thursday where i can get a clearer shot of the artist.

planning for music video _ synergy

planning for music video : synergy

To make sure there is synergy throughout the production of the music video as well as on my artists digipak i will make sure i use one specific font and background format e.g black and white to create synergy for the artists main brand identity.

for example :

I have made this photo the album cover for 'victor mase' because i feel that it is easy for the audience to get a visual image of who the artists is.

planning for music video: choice of costume , settings, props and location with justification for these decisions.

General information about the artists :

Victor Mase is a independent english singer-song writer, born and raised in north london, tottenham. At the moment he is not signed to a record label just yet however he is looking to get signed some time soon. He has gained a large fan base on youtube and many social media accounts such as twitter and facebook.

Costume: In my music video i wanted victor mase to wear casual clothing for example jeans and black top/jacket. this is because i wanted the simplicity of his costume to appeal to a wider audience and so therefore the audience will feel as though they have 'things' in common with victor and so are therefore drawn into his music as well as himself as an 'artist'. I also felt that him wearing a baseball jacket will be appealing to a young audience as high street brands such as Topman, JD, and Blue inc are able to replicate his outfit in another form and so therefore it is more accessible for fans to dress similar to him.

props:

In my music video there are no repeated props that appear and so therefore there is more focus on the artists and narrative of the song shown on screen.

location:
I chose to film in 2 main central locations in london. The first being leicester square. i felt this would be a great location to film because i wanted to show how the narrative of the song could reflect a journey between a couple and so in my music video there are a number of shots of victor and his girlfriend (actress) walking in leicester square and the rest of central london enjoying each others company. The second location i have chosen is embankment. i chose to use this location because i felt that it would be quite memorable for the audience to watch as it highlights londons famous site seeing locations.

planning for music video: Pitch - explain where your ideas for your video have come from?

Explain where your ideas for your video have come from ?

over the past couple of weeks i have looked over a range of videos in order to have a general scope of what i want my music video to look like. so far only a few music videos have stood out to me for ideas and concepts.

1) sam smith- stay with me

so for most of the chorus scenes i would like for there to be a close up image of the artists lip synching. here we can identify clearly who the artist is and also understanding the meaning behind the narrative from the artists point of view.
2) Ed sheeran - the A team

I specifically like this shot of the 'homeless lady' appearing at 'angel station. this is because i would like to highlight some tourists sites and main features of London in my music video. in order to create a 'sense of story telling' for the audience.
3) Adele- someone like you

I  feel that this shot is good because it really highlights the setting and location but also the black and white edit on the music video demonstrate the mood of the song which is sad. however in my music video i aim to use a similar location only the artist will not be lip synching instead he will be acting out a particular scene-( with him and his girlfriend laughing together)
4) powerless- rudimental ft jackie hill

again i really love the location in this shot even though is not London. it creates a visual image of a famous city that people do not usually look at in a less exciting way as the song talks about being 'powerless'. this is a contrast with the location because it new york is a place where especially famous people have power however the twins shown in this music video are portrayed to be powerless in their situation.

planning music video: PITCH - brand image

planning for music video: teacher feedback

what i need to improve on :

  • make sure prezi and emaze posts are embedded onto blogger properly
  • plan for your filming- location , costume, settings , props
  • do my storyboards
  • increase blogging on detail on planning and research.
